A Moment of Restoring Childhood

I’m spoiled.

Mostly for the fact that I get to see first-hand - more than anyone - the frontline impact of this mission.

So, to bring you closer to what it looks like, I want to share a story from one of our recent deliveries at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

Just like any other delivery, we packed up over 150 new LEGO® kits and set out for our visit.

But this particular visit also included a Play Club - where we set-up in a playroom and kids were able to get out of their rooms and just build with us. We've been rolling out this program in an effort to get kids out of their rooms and help normalize and socialize within the hospital environment.

Patients trickled in, picked a new kit to build, and got to work. It was a great day for this mission. But when I sat down to join them, something so much bigger occurred to me.

Joining 3 young patients - NG tubes, IVs, and wheelchairs included - at the table to build with LEGO® immediately restored feelings of childhood.

All four of us were working on our own builds. But we were reaching across the table to help a new friend find a piece, talking about our favorite LEGO® sets ever, bragging about our biggest builds, and just hanging out like we’ve been buddies for years.

There was no talk about being in a hospital or illness or what medical challenge they might have been going through that day . . . in that single moment, being sick was forgotten.

I share this small story with you because it's the real impact of this mission . . . it is the feeling behind our purpose and why we jumped all in on this passion project.

For me, it was the feeling I felt over 20 years ago as I battled Leukemia, and the long days and weeks spent at the hospital. And the feeling we work to share with thousands of other sick kids going through the same.

This mission exists for this feeling.

And on this day, our purpose was crystal clear.

This is the impact of your giving.

It’s the simple gift of LEGO® that can restore so much for a sick kid
